Willa Cather (1873-1947) was an American novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for One of Ours and spent her career mapping the interior lives of pioneers, artists, and immigrants on the Great Plains. She grew up in Nebraska at a time when the frontier was still being settled, and that experience gave her an unusually long view of human struggle and endurance. Cather wrote with extraordinary precision about what it costs to build something from nothing, and why the same longings drive every generation regardless of era or circumstance.

Cather wrote this in O Pioneers!, published in 1913, her breakthrough novel about immigrant families carving lives out of the Nebraska prairie. The observation arrives not as philosophy but as plain fact, delivered with the quiet authority of someone who has watched several generations face the same tests. What makes the line land so hard is the word "fiercely" — the stories repeat not gently but with full force, as though they have forgotten they have happened before.
