The Work Only You Can Do Right Now

Inspirational image for quote

"An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times."

— Nina Simone

Nina Simone (1933-2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist whose work refused to separate artistic beauty from political urgency. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in North Carolina, she was denied admission to the Curtis Institute of Music despite a brilliant audition — a rejection she attributed to racial discrimination and that set the course of her career. Her catalog ranged from jazz and blues to classical and folk, but it was songs like Mississippi Goddam, written in fury after the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, that defined what she believed music was for: not escape, but reckoning.

Context

Simone said this in a 1968 interview, at the peak of the civil rights movement, at a moment when some artists were being advised to keep politics out of their work. She disagreed entirely. Her argument was not that every artist must make protest songs — it was that creative work does not exist in a sealed room, separate from history. The times press in. The question is whether you let them or pretend they do not. Simone chose full acknowledgment, and it cost her: radio stations refused to play her music, audiences were sometimes hostile, and her career suffered commercially. She pressed on. The phrase "as far as I'm concerned" is worth noticing — she was not issuing a mandate but claiming a position, one she arrived at through lived experience and held without apology. For anyone who makes things, the question the quote asks is still alive: what does your era need from your particular voice, and are you willing to find out?

Today's Mantra

My creativity is not separate from my time — it is my response to it.

Reflection Question

What are the times you are living in asking of your particular gifts — your work, your voice, your presence, your creative output? And what would it look like to answer that call honestly, even if it made some people uncomfortable, even if it cost you something?

Application Tip

Sometime this week, look at whatever you are currently making or working on — a project, a presentation, a piece of writing, a conversation you are preparing — and ask: does this reflect anything true about the moment I am living in? Not in a heavy-handed way, but in the sense that Simone meant: does it carry the temperature of the times, or has it been carefully insulated from them? You do not have to make protest art. You have to be honest about where you are standing when you make your work.
