Showing Up To Be Seen

Inspirational image for quote

"Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen."

— Brené Brown

Brené Brown (born 1965) is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, where she has spent more than two decades studying vulnerability, shame, courage, and empathy. Her 2010 TEDxHouston talk became one of the most viewed TED talks ever. She is the author of The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and Atlas of the Heart, several of them number-one New York Times bestsellers, and hosts the podcasts Unlocking Us and Dare to Lead. Her perspective matters here because her conclusions rest on thousands of interviews, not opinion, and they ground courage in ordinary exposure.

RESILIENCE AND COURAGE
VULNERABILITY
AUTHENTICITY

Context

The line comes from Daring Greatly (2012), Brown's book on vulnerability, whose title borrows from Theodore Roosevelt's "man in the arena" speech. It grew out of years of interviews in which she expected to find confident people and instead found people who had risked exposure: admitting a mistake, asking for help, sharing unfinished work. Brown also notes that the word courage traces to the Latin cor, meaning heart. Her point cuts against the heroic image of courage as a dramatic act. It begins with presence. In an age of curated profiles and polished résumés, being seen as you actually are, uncertain and unfinished, remains the harder and rarer act.

Today's Mantra

I show up as I am and let myself be seen today.

Reflection Question

Where in your life are you quietly performing a more polished version of yourself, and what are you afraid people would find if they saw the unedited one? Who has earned the right to see it?

Application Tip

Choose one place today where you have been hiding behind polish: an unfinished idea, a question you fear sounds naive, or a struggle you have told no one about. Set a ten-minute window before the end of the day. Share it with one trusted person or in one meeting, saying plainly what you are unsure about. Afterward, write two sentences noting what happened and how it felt. Repeat once a week, and watch whether being seen costs what you feared.
